Assessment Report

January 13, 2025

Dear Friends,

It is my pleasure to present the Office of the Registrar’s annual assessment report for 2024.  Recently, enrollment service units moved to a goals-oriented assessment process, and this past year was fruitful for us.

This past year, we have focused our attention on three key areas:

  • changes to our medical exception process
  • planning for a strategic plan for the Office
  • evaluating our degree audit positioning, and examining new products on the market

The OR performed a business process analysis of our antiquated process, and identified key changes that would support the university’s new medical exception policy.  This included creating new processes in Banner to support the changes in policy.  We also began reviewing all communications, built out a series of electronic forms for students to apply for a medical exception, built a status page for students to know where their request is in the process, and workflows for routing and approvals.  The policy went into effect for Fall 2024, and the technology supporting it will go live in January 2025.

As part of a strategic planning process, we identified key work that needed to be examined was around class scheduling.  Our Scheduling department hosted a series of Scheduling Summits, both in-person and on-line, which identified key issues we need to take to further this process.  We also met with department chairs in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, which helped us identify a need for a new dashboard to assist deans, chairs, and scheduling coordinators in building their schedule.  We anticipate this dashboard to be built in 2025, and training will occur at that point.  Our strategic planning efforts will continue in the current year.

We spent the year talking with various campus constituencies, including student leaders, advisors, and academic leadership about evolving Wayne State’s degree planning and auditing processes and possibly, technology.  As a result of this process, we have proposed changes, which will assist students and advisors in registering for the right classes when they are needed.  We also identified key data points that we do not currently have access to that we will need moving forward.  If approved, we expect this implementation will be a long-term project and will require much support campus-wide.

Any comments you have regarding these goals, our assessment of them, or other goals we may consider for future years can be directed to me at registrar@wayne.edu.  Your feedback is welcome.

Best wishes,

Kurt A. Kruschinska
University Registrar
