Access to the Student Tracking Advising Retention System (STARS) platform

Wayne State University advisors, faculty, staff and students must use their access ID/password combination to log into STARS. STARS login requires Duo Two-Factor Authentication.

New, current, or returning students:
  • If you have ever been issued an access ID from Admissions, you will have access to this service. Simply use your current access ID and password with Duo two-factor authentication.
  • If you have been gone from Wayne State University for an extended period, you may have to reactivate your account and reset your password. To do that, use the self-service link here: How to Reset your Password or call at 313-577-HELP.
Prospective students: 
  • If you have not had an access ID issued to you, please create a Prospective account at stars.wayne.edu.
Advisor/Faculty/Staff access:

Appropriate WSU personnel may be provisioned access to the platform based on legitimate business need. Please review the following roles and request the appropriate access through your supervisor and then your unit's Business Affairs Officer as described below.

  • Reporter role: For users who NEED ONLY to view student data, but DO NOT support, provide or manage student appointments. Equivalent to STARS Legacy 'Advisor' User Role.
    • HAS access to Student Search, Student Profile and Reports
    • CAN Send Student Emails, Add Comments to the student record
    • NO access to Appointment Management Tools
  • Staff: Supports and manages student appointments.
    • HAS Access to Student Search, Student Profile and Reports
    • CAN Send Student Emails, Add Comments to the student record
    • CAN Create, Cancel, Check-In Appointment Records
  • Advisor role: Meets with students and provides availability for student appointments.
    • HAS Access to Student Search, Student Profile and Reports
    • CAN Send Student Emails, Add Comments to student record
    • CAN Create, Cancel, Check-In Appointment Records
    • CAN MANAGE OWN Appointment Availability
  • Manager: Manages service department's appointment availability.
    • HAS Access to Student Search, Student Profile and Reports
    • CAN Send Student Emails, Add Comments to student record
    • CAN Create, Cancel, Check-In Appointment Records
    • CAN MANAGE ANY Advisor's Appointment Availability
To request access:

All University staff (including student employees) requesting STARS 2.0 access must complete the following:

  1. Complete the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) form:  CODE OF RESPONSIBILITY FOR SECURITY AND CONFIDENTIALITY FOR STUDENT DATA (1972 FERPA)  Information about FERPA can be found here: WSU FERPA Brochure or here: Department of Education FERPA Information
  2. Provide business justification for access to the student academic record to your manager and/or directly to your BAO.
  3. Have your Business Affairs Officer (BAO) download and complete the Enterprise Applications Access Request Form from https://tech.wayne.edu/enterpriseapps/access. The form must be completed by the applicant's Business Affairs Officer who is authorized to review and submit for processing.
