Pre-Veterinary School at WSU

'Pre-Vet is not a major or minor at WSU. Students who identify as 'pre-vet' plan to attend veterinary school after earning their bachelor's degree. Supplemental academic advisors work in the PMHSC with the intention of helping students prepare and submit a competitive application to veterinary school. Advising topics include, but are not limited to preparatory coursework, professional development activities and the application process. Students interested in learning more about veterinary school are asked to attend a Pre-Vet Information Session BEFORE schedulingaone on one appointment with an advisor.

Veterinary Medicine

"Embark on an exciting career path in veterinary medicine, where you can put your knowledge and compassion into practice. Preventing disease and healing animals is at the heart of what veterinarians do. But they also do so much more. Whether they're pets, livestock or working animals, animals matter to individuals and society. Every community needs veterinary professionals to provide animal health care, but veterinarians also do many other kinds of jobs. They make sure the nation's food supply is safe. They work to control the spread of diseases. They conduct research that helps both animals and humans. Veterinarians are at the forefront of protecting the public's health and welfare." Besides medical skills, veterinarians often take a holistic approach to human well-being and animal welfare that, combined with communications and problem-solving skills, makes veterinarians uniquely qualified to fulfill a variety of roles. Students interested in learning more about the Veterinary profession can visit the American Association of Veterinary Colleges. 

Many of the 30 veterinary schools in the US require and/or recommend very similar prerequisite coursework. ThisAssociation of American Veterinariran Medical Colleges (AAMVC)chartdoes a great job highlighting the similarities and differences between prerequisite coursework outlined by various veterinary schools. 

In addition to prerequisite coursework, students interested in applying to veterinary school may be required tosit for a GRE or MCAT exam. The content tested on each exam is different, but both cover a broad range of subjects.
