Grade Point Average

When applying to medical school, it is important to remember that all attempts of all courses from all post-secondary institutions must be reported on the application.  Nationally, successful applicants to allopathic programs (MD) have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.7 on a 4.0 scale.  Successful applicants to osteopathic programs (DO) have a 3.6 on a 4.0 scale.  

Medical schools look beyond the cumulative GPA when choosing candidates.  They also want to see an improvement in grades over time and equally strong grades in science and non-science classes.  Sciences are typically defined as biology, chemistry, physics and math, but this can vary by school.  The PMHSC team will work with each student to ensure that they apply to medical school with an appropriate GPA.  In some cases, this may require post-Bachelor's or Master's level course work.

• Canadian: OMSAS standardizes all submitted transcripts using an Institution Scale Chart. Wayne State University grades will be converted using Scale 8. The OMSAS Grade Calculation page is another useful tool.
